With Cinco de Mayo, “drink locally” isn’t usually a motto. You’ve got your tequila and your mezcal made in Mexico, by law, and limes aren’t much of a regional crop. But at Lucy’s American Tavern in Dorchester, bartenders are finding ways around that.
The Dia de los Muertos is a mezcal-based drink fortified with Fabrizia Blood Orange, a liqueur that’s handmade in Salem, N.H. That sweet, rich citrus makes the grapefruit juice in the drink taste all the more intense, so it can hold its own against the mezcal’s deep smokiness. So while your mind might drift to Mexico this weekend, your conscience can stay rooted in New England.
